Expert Data Annotation Pricing

There is no honest universal rate for expert data annotation. A number copied from a forum describes a different product—often Level 1 classification. Expert programs price the specification.

We are not a freelancer marketplace or traditional staffing company.

How is expert data annotation priced?

Cost is Expert Labor plus Qualification plus Project Management plus QA plus Adjudication plus tooling or security overhead. Each component depends on the written specification: who the experts are, how hard the items are, how many review layers you need, and where the work can be done.

What changes the price

  • Professional scarcity

  • Task complexity and time per item
  • Project length
  • Hours per expert
  • Qualification burden
  • Review layers
  • Adjudication rate
  • Security requirements

Conceptual pricing model

This is a way to talk about a quote, not a published rate card and not a competitor-price comparison. No invented hourly bands appear here.

Expert labor

Hours from people who match the specification. Scarcity and seniority dominate this line.

Qualification

Time to verify credentials and score sample work that resembles production. A cheap hire who fails the task is not cheap.

Project management

Routing, replacement, reporting, and the operating counterpart after the sale.

QA

Calibration, gold-set monitoring, and sampling. Missing QA is how cheap production becomes expensive rework.

Adjudication

Senior time on disputed or gold items. Used selectively; priced separately from first-pass labels when the mix is material.

Tooling or security overhead

Client-environment access, extra controls, and constrained tooling. These are design choices, not decorations.

Single review versus double review versus adjudication
CriterionBest useRelative costConfidence
Single reviewLow-ambiguity items after calibrationLowest production costAdequate when gold-set misses stay rare
Double reviewHigh-impact or high-ambiguity itemsAbout 2x labeling labor on those itemsHigher; disagreement becomes visible
Senior adjudicationDisputed items and gold-set creationHighest per item; used selectivelyHighest if the adjudicator is more senior or specialized
